In-Class Assignment: The Storyboard

Knight, Lab Coat, Library

These three words were what we had to use to come up with a story. It was difficult to include them all into a story that made sense. We ended up creating a story about a scientist, with a lab coat, spilling a chemical on himself and turning into a knight. He didn't know what to do with himself and started to wander the streets. He then comes across a library and reads about becoming a knight. This story ends with the knight questioning weather he should try and turn back into a scientist or become the best knight the world's ever seen.

Project 8: Mix Tapes

Cello Suite No. 1 in G by J.S. Bach

When I listened to this song by Bach I thought instantly of flowers growing. The cello obviously plays a prominent role in the song, so that image comes into my mind also. I think this drawing of flowers growing out of a cello represents the song well visually.

Sad Sad City by Ghostland Observatory

I found this song extremely hard to illustrate. The words, in my opinion, don't match the lyrics. When I listened to the beat, I thought of disco, lights, and a man with an afo. The lyrics, however, talk about no partying in a sad city, and that changes the image in my mind. For these reasons I decided to draw a man in a disco outfit who wants to party, but unfortunately there is no partying in a "sad sad city".

E.S.P. by The Miles Davis Quintet

This was my favorite song to illustrate. It is a jazz tune so I thought of jazz people playing instruments on a stage. When I thought about how to draw the musicians on the stage, I decided it would be most fitting to just have their silhouettes because a specific color didn't come to mind when I heard jazz.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1

When I heard this song, I instantly thought of a cartoon character. The song seems silly and childish so that is what I portrayed in my illustration. The drew the girl with a smirk on her face because the song is a happy tone. I thought this song was difficult to draw.

Project 7: The Bard

Jett Theatre Presents: Macbeth

This poster represents the play "Macbeth" created by my pseudonym. I used gouache paint for the hands and blood marks. Then took the paper into illustrator and to give it a dark feel rather then just being on white paper. Doing this poster as my pseudonym made me think of using a medium that I don't ever use. So I made it dark, scary, and gory. This fits the design style of "Joan Jett" perfectly.

In-Class Assignment: Editorial Illustration

Monster Advertising

This illustration demonstrates how advertising follows you even when you are unaware that it is doing so. I drew a man walking out of his office with a "Ad Monster" putting ads all around his office and even in his back pocket. All while he is completely unaware.

Project 6: Simplification Through Symbolism

I chose to draw a wet dog for this particular quote because it talks about a dog taking a bath. I think the creative part of the drawing is that I drew the dog smiling. Most dogs in the rain would be drawn sad, but this dog is happy because it is "sprinkling a shower of advice".

I found this interpretation to be correct because it clearly portrays the quote. I found this quote slightly difficult to make a symbol for because all of the words are descriptive. One of the other ideas I had for this quote was to draw a person and put duct tape over their mouth, however I thought that was getting to detailed.

This is my favorite quote. I decided to draw two hearts because that shows that the good things you do will come back around, and good things will happen to you. I made them sharp edged to show that bad things can also come back around if you do bad things onto others.

In-Class Assignment: Between Ugliness and Beauty

Runner/Smoker

In my opinion a muscular and toned body is beautiful. However, I feel that if I see that person smoking, it takes away a lot of their beauty because I associate smoking with the word ugly.

Pug

A Pug dog is the perfect example of something that is beautiful and ugly. They are such ugly dogs, but there is something about them that is so cute. I own a pug and have had many people tell me that she is so ugly that she's cute.

Atomic Bomb

Bombs are ugly, and cause a lot of damage and even death. However, if you look at pictures of atomic bombs, they are incredibly beautiful. That is why I decided to draw a bomb, and color it with beautiful colors. It shows both sides of beauty and ugly.

Marriage/Divorce

Marriage, along with everything it represents, is a beautiful thing. Unfortunately in today's society marriage often leads to divorce. Divorce gets ugly, and comes with a lot of pain and heart ache. That is why I drew this picture of a couple getting married, but it is torn down the center.

Project 4: Cyrk Poster

My Cyrk poster conveys the emotion of hate. The evil clown is scary, which is what emphasizes the hatred. The font choice is also dark to fit with the clown. Hate is an emotion that I have not conveyed in any of my work, so I found it to be fitting for it to be the main emotion of my pseudonym.

In-Class Assignment: Pseudonym
